Eden Heritage is an independent archaeology and heritage consultancy, established to provide high-quality professional heritage impact assessment, geophysical survey and archaeological services which are competitively priced and client focused. We offer a dedicated archaeological service based on extensive experience. With more than 15 years experience our staff can provide pragmatic solutions for your site.

Meet Our Consultants

Martin Railton, Managing Director at Eden Heritage, has worked for two decades in commercial archaeology and is passionate about conserving the historic environment. Having graduated with a degree in Archaeology and masters degree in Archaeological Survey from Durham University, Martin trained with English Heritage. Following three years with Archaeological Services at Durham University, Martin joined North Pennines Archaeology as a Project Officer, where he established the geophysical survey service for the company. Subsequently he spent five years as Senior Project Manager at Wardell Armstrong Archaeology in Carlisle. In 2015 Martin moved to Manchester to develop archaeology and heritage services for Wardell Armstrong as Associate Director, before returning to Cumbria to start Eden Heritage in 2019. He is also founder of the Appleby Archaeology Group and manages the the group's fieldwork, having successfully delivered several community projects. Martin's work as a social entrepreneur was recognised by the Millennium Commission in 2000 when he received a Rural Leadership Award; work he continues with Eden Heritage. In 2022 he was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the Queen's Jubilee Birthday Honours List for services to the archaeology and community of Appleby-in-Westmorland.

Fiona Wooler, Historic Buildings and Research Specialist at Eden Heritage, has  20 years’ experience of working in cultural heritage, initially as a Buildings Archaeologist and Researcher, and then as a Heritage Consultant for Wardell Armstrong LLP. Fiona has worked for Eden Heritage Ltd since 2019, being responsible for compiling and writing technical reports such as Heritage Impact Assessments, Heritage Statements and Historic Building Recording Reports, which are generally for submission as part of a planning application or as a condition of approval. Fiona graduated with a degree in Archaeology and History in 2003 followed by a masters degree in Archaeology of Buildings from the University of York. She also has a Postgraduate Certificate in Architectural Conservation and Certificate in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) from the University of Central Lancashire.
Fiona is skilled and experienced in the archaeological investigation and interpretation of historic buildings, including historical research and surveying. She is used to working within a busy commercial environment and in completing projects to tight deadlines. Recent projects have included working alongside other disciplines such as architects and consultants, and she has experience of liaising and working alongside other bodies to prepare conservation management plans for historical sites.
